I find that there are two types of people: those who look forward to spring cleaning and those who dread it. Personally, spring is one of my favorite times of the year. The trees coming back to life, the smell of that first grass clipping, finally being able to open the windows, and of course, spring cleaning. Over the winter, especially a winter spent in lockdown, things tend to accumulate. Dust, cobwebs, dead batteries in the junk drawer, who knows what under the kid’s beds…Before the busy summer schedule kicks off, spring is a great time to deep clean, unclutter and reset your routine to keep your home (and your life) better organized.
Here are a few ways to make it a little bit more bearable.
Get Inspired
If you think that spring cleaning is really something that could probably wait until next year, or maybe the year after, then look no further than Netflix for some inspiration to get you going. Tidying Up with Marie Kondo or Get Organized with The Home Edit will both give you ideas that you can implement into your home and routine. It might even have you convinced that you deserve to headline the next Netflix Original…
Make a list
Having a checklist can help you to stay organized and motivated throughout your spring cleaning journey. Make your own list, or check out one of these: Room by Room Checklist and Easy Tasks Checklist
Focus on one room at a time
Now that you have that checklist, things can seem pretty overwhelming. Like with any big task, it is important to set realistic goals. If you set out to clean every nook and cranny of your house from top to bottom next Saturday, you might just be setting yourself up for failure. Give yourself small tasks and just focus on one area at a time. Create a reward system for yourself as you go to help stay motivated.
Clear the Clutter
As you go through each room, clear out the clutter. We have all been spending more time than usual in our homes. I don’t know about you, but it has made me very aware of what I use, what I don’t, and where the inefficiencies in my house are. If you find yourself working from home, homeschooling, or just not able to get out as much, you might find that you are in need of more space. One of the best ways to create space is by getting rid of things that you don’t need. If you have hit your shin three times this week on the kid’s play table that they never use anymore, it might be time to put that table on Marketplace.
Get organized
Another great way to create more room is by organizing your space in an efficient way. Things like labeled boxes and bins, and multi-purpose storage furniture, can really help to open up your space. By putting things in labeled boxes, you not only make it easier to find things but you also make it possible to use vertical space in your home that might otherwise go unused. Stacking bins, and using shelves can greatly increase the storage capacity of your closets, pantry, and fridge.
Keep it up
Once you have completed your spring clean, it’s time to make a maintenance plan. Make a schedule of daily and weekly tasks that are manageable in order to maintain the cleanliness of and organization of your home.
