While my favorite season of the year doesn’t technically begin until September 22nd, I can already smell the pumpkin spice in the air weeks ahead of time. I mean, if your decorations weren’t up by the first of the month – you’re late! I have been unable to resist the urge to pull out those “fall decorations” boxes from the basement in hopes that my pumpkin filled front porch will encourage the sweater weather to begin. In this blog, we offer a couple of pointers to our readers that are feeling that itch to pull out the apple cinnamon candles and leafy window decals.
Choose a theme for your fall display
If you walk into any Hobby Lobby or Michaels after July 4th, you will be hit with a wall of orange, plaid, leafy garlands, and pumpkins. It can be overwhelming! Add in the intoxicating fragrant of scented pine cones and you may be leaving with a migraine and $200 worth of decor. We get it – when everything is adorable it can be hard to make choices about what will be a good fit for your home and style. One thing is for sure, if you grab some of everything, your dreams of pinterest glory might be dashed when you realize your front porch is a bit of a hodge podge. My suggestion? Choose a theme and stick with it. You want your holiday decor to compliment your home. When creating a fall display, think about what will work well with your already established style.
Take advantage of fall foliage
Incorporating both real and artificial foliage is a great way to bring life and color into your fall display. For example, adding garlands to your mantel or as a runner on your dining room table can be a simple way to make a big impact. Using classic fall flowers like mums or sunflowers can also bring a great pop of autumn color to your home. Especially as the trees become bare, it is refreshing to keep flowers around the house. A study between Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital found that when we had flowers to look at first thing in the morning, respondents confirmed of feeling more energetic and positive. Now that’s flower power!
Think outside of the box with twinkling lights
Trust us – “Christmas” lights aren’t just for Christmas. Adorning your fall wreath with twinkling lights can be just as magical as lighting up your Christmas tree. Flameless candles are another great way to bring autumn ambience to your home. If it’s too warm to curl up by the fire, fill your hearth with battery illuminated candles to establish the same cozy vibe. Not only is this look Pinterest-approved, it’s also a safer alternative for those with pets or children.
The little things make a big difference
You don’t have to go overboard to make your home feel warm and cozy for the fall season. Throw blankets, textured pillows and small fall accents can make a big impression on your space without overwhelming it. Start small – bring out a fuzzy blanket, hang a wreath on the porch, and light up your favorite fall candle. We may be biased here in Michigan, but fall is one of the most beautiful seasons.
